Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 - A Retrospective Review

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is the second installment in the Modern Warfare sub-series, which started with Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare in 2007. The game was released in 2009 by Infinity Ward and published by Activision.

The game is set five years after the events of the first game, where a new Russian ultranationalist leader, Vladimir Makarov, has emerged and reignited the conflict between the West and Russia. The game follows the efforts of the elite Task Force 141, led by Captain John Price and John “Soap” MacTavish, to stop Makarov and his terrorist network, as well as the United States Army Rangers, who are fighting against the Russian invasion of the United States.

The game features three main modes: single-player, co-op, and multiplayer. The single-player mode consists of a linear campaign that spans across 18 missions, set in various locations around the world, such as Afghanistan, Brazil, Russia, Kazakhstan, and the United States.

The campaign is divided into three acts, each with a different theme and objective. The first act focuses on the hunt for Makarov and his associates, the second act focuses on the defense of the United States from the Russian attack, and the third act focuses on the final confrontation and resolution of the conflict.

The campaign is filled with cinematic moments, intense action, and dramatic twists, as well as some controversial scenes, such as the infamous “No Russian” mission, where the player participates in a massacre at a Moscow airport.

The co-op mode, called Special Ops, allows up to two players to team up and complete various challenges and objectives across 23 maps, based on the locations from the campaign and the multiplayer.

The co-op mode is divided into five categories: Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, and Echo. Each category has a different difficulty and type of missions, such as stealth, assault, defense, or time trial. The co-op mode also features a ranking system, where players can earn stars and unlock new missions and items.

The multiplayer mode is the core of the game, where players can choose from six classes and engage in competitive matches with up to 18 players on 16 maps. The multiplayer mode also includes several new features and improvements, such as Customizable Killstreaks, a system that allows players to choose their own rewards for killing enemies, such as UAVs, sentry guns, or tactical nukes, Prestige Mode, a system that allows players to reset their level and unlock new emblems and titles, and Callsigns, a system that allows players to customize their name, emblem, and title.

The multiplayer mode also features a robust progression system, where players can level up, unlock new weapons, attachments, perks, and challenges, and earn experience points and currency.

The game’s graphics and sound are impressive, creating a realistic and immersive atmosphere. The game also boasts a high level of customization, allowing players to change the appearance and loadout of their soldiers, weapons, and equipment.

The game also features a user-generated content system, called IWNet, which allows players to create and share their own maps, modes, and videos, as well as access statistics, guides, and community events.

The game is not without its flaws, however. The game has been criticized for its short and linear campaign, its lack of innovation, especially compared to its predecessors and competitors, and its technical issues, such as bugs, glitches, and hac*ers.

The game also faced some controversy over its depiction of violence, war, and politics, with some players and critics accusing the game of being insensitive, unrealistic, and propaganda. The game also had a troubled development cycle, with several conflicts, lawsuits, and departures involving the developers and the publishers.

Overall, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is a game that offers a lot of variety and fun for fans of the genre, but also has some shortcomings and controversies. The game is a thrilling and satisfying sequel to the first Modern Warfare game, as well as a successful entry in the Call of Duty series.

The game is available on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC, and is also included in the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Trilogy bundle.
